  1. What did you do for your practicum?  Please include a detailed description

For my Practicum I completed the BMGT 289I course with Jeff Miller. This course is titled, “Why Good Managers Make Bad Decisions.” In this course we learned about evidence-based decision making and how managers should apply this to their everyday activities. By using research, individuals are able to become successful managers, thus producing stellar results. We had weekly reflections to discuss what we learned, while we simultaneously completed the Globus simulation. The Globus simulation allowed us to feel as if we were running our own business and competing against competitive markets. Finally we read the book, “Ben Franklin: America's Original Entrepreneur,” by Blain McCormick in order to learn entrepreneurship from one of our founding fathers.

2. What did you learn from your practicum?

The main takeaway that I have gathered from my practicum is that good managers are those who save smartly. We were taught Benjamin Franklin’s famous saying that, “a penny saved is a penny earned,” helping us understand the importance of time and money. When one saves, they have the potential to grow their savings, thus setting them up for success in the future.

What are your plans for:

a. For the test of my time at UMD I will continue to take classes in international business and finance. I hope to complete 150 credits and study abroad Spring of my junior year.

b. Post-graduation I want to move to New York City and begin working for a company of my interest. I eventually want to work in Venture Capital, but I plan to start in sales or consulting. Overall, I am pretty flexible with my post-graduation plans because I don’t know what the future has in store for me.

3. How have you grown as a leader, student, and professional? Upload at least 1 artifact as evidence of that growth and discuss WHY you chose it. Describing WHY you uploaded something is more important than the item itself.

I have grown as a leader through my newfound understanding of how it is essential to keep up with the forever-changing marketplace. When managers fail to recognize the modern changes around them, they fail to adapt to new innovative times and ways, making them more prone to failure. I have attached my final reflection from BMGT 289I below. I decided to include this assignment because it is really representative of everything I learned in the class. By reading what new knowledge I have discovered, one can understand how I have changed as a leader for the better.
